Graham and Bob,
If I may, I'd like take back what I just posted re a "balanced model"
Selmer cornet.
I have compared the photos of the cornet for sale on eBay with the
only "long-model" Selmer cornet I can put my hands on at present (not
a K-Modified model), and the cornet on eBay definitely has some
proportions that are different from my cornet. The valve cluster on
the eBay cornet appears to be about one "valve-casing's-width" farther
forward than on my own cornet, and the pinky hook on the eBay horn is
right at the curve in the leadpipe, while on mine it is about an inch
back from the curve.
So there is definitely something going on here . I'd like to compare
it to other "K-Modified" cornets to see if it is different.
One other point in my earlier e-mail remains, though. I don't think
Selmer ever offered a cornet that it specifically referred to as a
"balanced model." Selmer only referred to its trumpet model of that
design.
Selmer used a variety of wraps for their cornets, and early (pre-WW
II) cornets typically appear "wider" side to side than the later ones.
All very interesting for Selmer fans; for others, just boring
minutiae, I'm sure...
