[TPIN] Pulled the plug tonight

Stephan,
Actually, I think it is a good idea to "pull the plug" once in a
while!! I have noticed that if you don't the water gets pretty nasty! So pull
it!! Watch the old water move down the drain, but remember you still have the
horn, you still love music, you still love the trumpet, you still want to
play and be a part of making the music, you do not want to waste all the
effort you have put into it, and you are still very capable of learning!! So I
suggest now that the old is gone that you put the plug back in and turn the
faucet back on, being careful to balance both the cold and hot and also to
monitor the amount and I am sure at some point, after you go through this
process enough you will be able to soak up the joy of playing and making
music and you will think back on the notion of quitting and just smile!! I
experienced it and am still smiling!!
                Dan

i agree with john here Stephan. i sent you a private note but will say
this too. Orchestral music can be intimidating but it is also oh so
wonderful and satisfying to learn. You have always been very hard on yourself and
overyly perfecctionistic. I, like john encourage you to give yourself
another shot at some point. Perhaps taking yourself off the hot seat will
allow you to relaxt for a while and learn more about playing and about
orchestral music its truly a wonderful wonderful world of endless challenge and
beauty.

> I wasn't there so I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing you are being a
little hard on yourself. Having taught you a few lessons I can tell you
that you are like many much younger musicians, overconfident about the things
they can play and lacking in confidence about everything else. In other
words, you are so quick to interpret what is or isn't coming out the end of
the bell that you never just accept it for what it is, or isn't. What you
can do is a simple result of what you have worked on enough, what you can't
do yet is because you haven't worked on it hard enough yet. Talent is the
sum total of one's ability level, nothing more and nothing less. Counting
rests in orchestra music means listening to recordings with a score handy. If
you thought that part should have been a nobrainer, you just underestimated
the challenge.
