OK, listmates:
Many of you know the Atlantic LP (and Koch CD) called "Woody Herman's
Big New Herd at the Monterey Jazz Festival" -- recorded in October,
1959.
The trumpet section is listed as Al Porcino, Conte Candoli, Ray Linn,
& Frank Huggins. But Bill Chase is listed as a trombone player on the
album.
Other details: the band was *not* a Herman road band, but an all-star
"festival" band made up mostly of Herman alumni. The Herman book
usually has five trumpets and three bones, but here they are listed as
four and four.
ERGO, I assume that it's just a goof, and the Bill Chase was playing
in the trumpet section on this concert. This also makes sense since
the other duties of a "house" band would presumably not required a
fifth trumpet, and Chase was indeed already on Woody's road band at
that time (so he was easily added to the "all star" band that backed
up other acts). BTW, Conte plays a lot of great solos on this one, and
a nice break for Al Porcino at the end of "Apple Honey." Always good
to hear Porcino!! This album also has the distinction of being the
only time Mel Lewis played on a Herman Herd.
Can anyone elucidate?
At any rate, I'll be featuring this recording in tonights NPR jazz
program originating in Western New England at www.wfcr.org (8PM-11PM
EST). Part of our weekly "Golden Anniversary" series.
Thanks,
Peter
